History : |
|
With 50 Canadair Sabre Mk.6 and some Lockheed T-33 the FW 71 was formaly activated on
06.06.1959 at Ahlhorn AFB. At the End of 1961 the Wing began to move to Wittmund AFB, but during the movement in early 1961 the Wing got the new F-104 G Starfighter. Also in 1961 the Wing got his traditional name "Richthofen" Because of the fact that both aircraft types were in use with the Wing a 3rd Squadron at Ahlhorn was activated, which flew the F-86, while 1st and 2nd Squadron at Wittmund flew the F-104 G Starfighter. This unusal conditions last until September 1964, when the last F-86 were phased out. In 1973, after twelve years with the F-104 G Starfighter the first MDD F-4F arrived in Wittmund. This aircraft will be flown until 2012, when it is planed to introduce the Eurofighter. In June 2008, when the last F-4F's will leave the JG 74 at Neuburg, the JG 71 R will be the last Wing flying this typ of aircraft. |
