1957 the "Erprobungsstelle für militärisches Luftfahrtgerät" was activated at Oberpfaffenhofen,
after a longer search for an usable Airbase.
It was clear that Oberpaffenhofen was not usable with newer jets like the F-104 G
because of its short runway.
And because of the buildings around the airbase, the runway could not be longned.
So, parallel to the build-up of the Unit, the search for a new homebase didn´t stop.
In 1958 the unit was integrated in the BWB and renamed to "Erprobungsstelle für Luftfahrtgerät",
but in 1962 all Test Units were renumbered and so the name changed to "Erprobungsstelle 61
der Bundeswehr".
In 1965 the first parts of the E-Stelle 61 moved to Manching AFB began, but it lasted until 1967 to finish the movement.
In 1987 a reoganistaion of the BWB lead to the new name "Wehrtechnische Dienststelle für
Luftfahrzeuge 61".
The reorganisation after the German Reunification forced the Air Force to close some Units.
The smaller Air Force and the reduced number of aircrafts lead to a shortening in the financial
structure of the WTD 61 and to a reduced Unit.
