History :

The LTG 61 was officially activated on 01.03.1957 at Erding AFB.
Because the delivery of the new Noratlas was delayed, the Wing flew first with 18 Douglas C-47 D which came for US and English surplus stocks.

Already in December 1957 the first Noratlas arrived and the 2nd Squadron was build up. With now two Transport Squadrons the Erding AFB was to small and in 1958 the Wing was moved to Neubiberg AFB.

In 1970 the Wing starts changing to the new german-french Transporter C.160 D Transall. This work lasts until end of 1971 and during this time the Wing was also forced to move to the new build Penzing AFB.

In 1979 a Helicopter Squadron of the disbanded HTG 64 was integrated in the LTG 61.

The LTG 61 is the oldest, active wing of the German Air Force and in 1993 it could celebrate it´s 500.000 flying-hour.

At the moment the planings show that the wing will be deactivated in 2016.
